Safer births

Healthier babies & mothers

A national platform trial to improve outcomes for women and babies around the time of birth.

WOMBAT will evaluate drugs, devices, treatments and models of care used during labour, birth and the newborn's first hour of life.  Developed with women, families, clinicians, communities and researchers, WOMBAT is part of an international collaboration whose first major project will be a UK-Australia Platform Tiral for Safer Birth at Term.

WOMen and BAbies platform Trial for safer birth at term

Improving birth outcomes for women, babies and families by finding out which drugs, devices and treatments work best around the time of birth.

WOMBAT Safer Birth at Term is an Australian platform trial designed to improve outcomes for women giving birth at or near term, and for newborn babies in the first hour after birth.

Rather than testing one question at a time, WOMBAT is being designed as a long-term platform that can evaluate multiple promising interventions efficiently, fairly and reliably — including drugs, devices, models of care and treatments used during labour, birth, the third stage of labour, the immediate postpartum period and the newborn’s first hour of life.

WOMBAT is part of an emerging international collaboration in high-income countries. Its first major project will be a UK–Australia Platform Trial for Safer Birth at Term, including WOMBAT in Australia.

Our aim is simple: safer births, healthier mothers, healthier babies, and better evidence for everyone involved in maternity and newborn care.
